Press Release

Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Mike Doyle (D-PA) released the following statement after learning of the death of former U.S. Representative John Dingell (D-MI).

“It’s impossible to overstate the impact that John Dingell had on Congress and this country. He was a influential force behind landmark legislation on civil rights, clean water, clean air, health care, and consumer protection – and his efforts to hold the Executive Branch accountable were legendary. History has shown that he was on the right side of an issue more often than not. We live in a cleaner, healthier, and more equitable country as a result of his leadership.

“John was a dedicated, principled public servant, and you always knew where he stood on an issue, whether his position was popular or not. He also had a wicked sense of humor, as his activity on Twitter in recent years documented.

“I had the privilege of working with him for many years on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and I consider him one of my mentors and dear friends in Congress. Much of what I’ve learned about legislating I learned from him. I am deeply grateful for all of the time, wisdom, and friendship he shared with me.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Debbie and the rest of his family.”
