Washington, DC –  U.S. Representative Mike Doyle (PA-18) condemned Trump Administration plans to transfer funds from the National Guard, military aircraft procurement, and Navy shipbuilding to finance the construction of a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico.

“This is absurd,” Congressman Doyle said. “The Trump Administration’s announcement today will not strengthen our country – quite the opposite. It cuts funding for crucial military equipment, hurts American jobs and our economy, and undermines our Constitution. Congress has the power of the purse, and we’ve made it crystal clear that President Trump’s border wall is a misguided approach to national security and a waste of taxpayer funds.”

The Pentagon announced it is taking $3.8 billion in funding from national security priorities, including the National Guard and Reserve Equipment, to fund President Trump’s border wall. This move cuts funding for state National Guards and the production of the F-35, V-22, P-8, C-130J, MQ-9, Air Force Light Attack aircraft, and naval warships.

Congress has repeatedly rejected President Trump’s full request for wall funding, including in Fiscal Year 2020. Earlier this week, President Trump released his proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2021, which called for significant cuts to Medicare, Social Security, healthcare, education, and environmental protection and requested an additional $2 billion for the border wall.
