September 5, 2008 – Congressman Doyle and State Senator Wayne D. Fontana presented several long-overdue military awards to Augustine Russo of Dormont. Mr. Russo, a U.S. Army Army veteran, served in the 40th Fighter Squadron of the 35th Fighter Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater in World War II but never received several medals and awards he had earned. After being notified of Mr. Russo’s case by Senator Fontana, Congressman Doyle worked with the Department of Defense to secure these awards. Congressman Doyle and Senator Fontana presented Mr. Russo with a WWII Victory Medal, an Asian Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 bronze service stars, a Good Conduct Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, and a Marksmanship badge with carbine bar.

April 28, 2008 - U.S. Representative Mike Doyle (PA-14) tonight presented Manami Kitazawa from Woodland Hills High School with the First Prize in the 2008 Congressional High School Art Competition for the 14th Congressional District of Pennsylvania. Her artwork, which will be displayed in the United States Capitol for one year, is an intricately detailed charcoal drawing depicting a blue jean jacket hanging on a coat rack. Her work was selected out of a collection of 50 entries from 10 high schools in Pennsylvania's 14th Congressional District.

The second place prize went to Crystal Flora from Northgate High School for her untitled acrylic painting. The third place prize went to Pamela Patton from Sto-Rox High School for her pastel composition entitled "Snow Bound." The fourth place prize went to Alyssa Haynes from Penn Hills High School for her pencil and white colored pencil composition entitled "African Wildlife Collage." The fifth place prize went to Alyssa Savatt from the Sto-Rox High School for her acrylic painting entitled "African Couple."

 

March 19, 2008 – Congressman Doyle presented a check for $1,675,000 to Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, State Senator Jay Costa, and the Pittsburgh Fire Department to purchase two new aerial trucks and new equipment for the fire academy and City fire stations.

February 11, 2008 – Congressman Doyle spoke at The Children’s Home & Lemieux Family Center to announce that he had secured $307,000 for the ongoing expansion project at The Children’s Home & Lemieux Family Center in Pittsburgh.

February 5, 2008 – Congressman Doyle and New Pittsburgh Courier publisher Rod Doss examinde some of the 750,000 photographs contained in the archives of the Pittsburgh Courier newspaper. Congressman Doyle secured $150,000 in federal funding to protect, preserve, digitize, and exhibit these historically significant photos.

January 3, 2008 – Congressman Doyle announced that he had secured $470,000 for the East End Cooperative Ministry’s programs for at-risk youth. This federal funding will be used to support in-school and after-school outreach programs that are designed to give at-risk youth opportunities in the community other than crime and juvenile delinquency.
