Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Mike Doyle (PA-14) released the following statement in response to President Obama’s announcement yesterday of the establishment of a national Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Master Teacher Corps.
“I strongly support President Obama’s proposal to improve US student achievements in science, technology, engineering, and math by attracting, rewarding, and retaining high-performing teachers in these fields.
“There’s real cause for concern that we may be losing our edge in these fields. American youth have been falling behind in STEM education evaluations compared to students in other countries.
“Our nation’s future economic growth depends in no small part on retaining our historic advantage in research and innovation – but we won’t be able to remain a world leader in science, technology, engineering, and math if we don’t have a workforce with the necessary background and skills.
“I commend President Obama for recognizing this national challenge and moving decisively to address it.”
