| West Mifflin High School Student Wins 2009 Congressional Art Competition |

Pittsburgh, PA – April 20, 2009 – U.S. Representative Mike Doyle (PA-14) tonight presented Steph Goodrow from West Mifflin High School with the First Prize in the 2009 Congressional High School Art Competition for the 14th Congressional District of Pennsylvania. Her artwork, which will be displayed in the United States Capitol for one year, is a chalk, pastel, and charcoal composition entitled “A Walk.” Her work was selected out of a collection of 55 entries from 12 high schools in Pennsylvania’s 14th Congressional District.
The second place prize went to Chloe Weiss from Penn Hills High School for her colored pencil drawing “Bullseye.”
The third place prize went to Shelby Gitchel from Taylor Allderdice High School for the drawing, “My Older Sister.”
The fourth place prize went to George Cessna from the Pittsburgh High School for the Creative and Performing Arts for his digital print called “Joey.”
“These young people are clearly very talented, and they obviously worked long and hard on the artwork they submitted,” Congressman Doyle said. “I’m very proud to represent these talented young artists and their families.” The competition was again sponsored by the Congressional Arts Caucus of the United States House of Representatives. This was the fifteenth year in a row that Congressman Doyle has hosted such events. All of the public and private high school students within the 14th Congressional District were invited to participate in this competition. The judges awarded the following 12 students Honorable Mentions for their artwork: 1. Linzie Bussard from Northgate High School for her acrylic work entitled “Madu Kaitsepiire.” 2. Christina Chiccitt from Carlynton High School for her mixed media piece “Imagination.” 3. Candace Davis from Woodland Hills High School for the acrylic and mixed media composition “Lo So Vo.”
4. Alessandra DeChancie from Woodland Hills High School for her charcoal drawing entitled “El Tigre.”
5. Crystal Flora from Northgate High School for her mixed media composition “Jellyfish Field.”
6. Elijah Johnson from Woodland Hills High School for a colored pencil drawing “Skull Study.”
8. Sarah Morgan from Woodland Hills High School for her linoleum print “Keaton Is the Goalie.”
9. Carly Otte from Penn Hills High School for her acrylic painting “Deep Space.”
10. Rachel Lynn Playso from West Mifflin High School for her acrylic composition entitled “Stonehenge.”
11. Nour Qutyan from Brashear High School for her photograph of a little girl.
12. Casey Snyder from Taylor Allderdice High School for an untitled photograph of a bumble bee on a purple flower and thistle. ### |
